Martina Tierling, Dog Trainer and Founder of North Norfolk Dog Training

Hi, I’m Martina, dog trainer and founder of North Norfolk Dog Training. My passion for dogs has been a constant throughout my life, but it was a rescue Newfoundland named Blakey who truly changed everything. He arrived at 17 months old, full of personality but lacking in training and social skills - a lovable 70+kg challenge. Working through his behavioural struggles sparked something in me; a deep desire to understand how dogs learn and to help others build better relationships with their own dogs. I learn't so much from Blakey, but sadly we had to say goodbye to him after a sudden short illness 2016, when he was 9 years old. That very special journey with him became the foundation for what I do today.

Since 2016, I’ve dedicated myself to the study of dog training and behaviour. I began my formal education whilst assisting with a well respected trainer and behaviourist in the area. He offered me the invaluable opportunity to assist in his weekly puppy classes. He gave lots of support and encouragement, and also allowed me to shadow him from time to time with one-to-one customers. I also gained hands-on experience assisting other local trainers with a mix of puppy and rescue classes. I was learning just how much every dog (and human) benefits from patient, personalised guidance.

My approach is grounded in kind, science-based, reward-focused methods. I believe in helping dogs feel safe and understood, and in empowering guardians with the skills and confidence they need to thrive together. Every dog is different, and every relationship is unique - so I tailor every session to meet both ends of the lead where they are at the time.

Before becoming a dog trainer, I spent 28 years in corporate travel, specialising in media and entertainments. I worked closely with high-profile clients and managed teams in London, and then later remotely when I relocated to Norfolk in 2008. What I bring from that world is a professional, empathetic communication style, and a genuine belief in the power of sharing what we know. Whether I’m training a team member or a dog guardian, I focus on building confidence, clarity, and connection. Ultimately, my role is not to train your dog for you - it’s to train you to understand and teach your dog in a way that works for both of you. And nothing makes me happier than seeing that connection click into place.
