Group Classes

Puppy and adult classes are held in a village hall with access to a secured walled garden. Weather permitting, classes will happen outside in the garden. I believe training outside offers a far better training experience, and is more true to life than only ever training within a hall. Whilst training inside is a more controlled environment for younger puppies, puppies and dogs do need to learn self-control with increased distractions including lots of smells and movement, which the great outdoors offers. Training outdoors enables us to perform exercises which require a higher level of self-control.  There will be a maximum of 5 places available in each class.

POSITIVE MODERN TRAINING TECHNIQUES

Harsh handling is not permitted during training and is strongly discouraged at any other time.

Training is force-free!

I run classes and training in accordance with this Code of Practice; choke chains, check chains, prong collars, slip leads, retractable leads, punitive methods are not allowed in classes or to be used during training.

Instead of correcting dogs when they get something wrong, in modern dog training we reward them when they get something right. Modern dog training uses a system of positive reinforcement, to modify the behaviour of a dog through controlling the consequences of its behaviour.   Like people, dogs learn new ways to respond through the consequences of their actions. The focus is on reinforcing behaviours we like, rather than correcting behaviours that we don’t like. This enables us to train dogs without any force or physical contact.

A dog trained using positive reinforcement is a confident dog. He has no reason not to be as he is constantly being set up to win.  If you own a dog who is nervous, frightened or shy, training using positive reinforcement becomes much safer and there’s a much higher chance of success because the dog is not being put through the stress of being physically manhandled.  Confidence is very important in dogs. It lowers stress levels and reduces the risk of aggression.

Leadership:- as a dog owner, you are responsible for everything your dog does, you are responsible for him and his well being!  You must provide him with the correct training for him to grow into a well balanced happy adult dog.

Testimonials

As first time owners of a lively flat coat retriever owner we sought out Martina to help us maximise our enjoyment with our new puppy. Martina is incredible; her positive training methods and eclectic tips from all her years of experience are invaluable to us. Not least her boundary training for a very food motivated dog! Martina travels to us and the training is very much a family activity. In following Martina’s methods, our puppy, Scout is becoming the most wonderful, obedient and well behaved dog but keeping all of her spirit and personality. Thank you Martina, it’s a journey we will continue for the rest of Scout’s life.
Rachel and Scout
We attended Martina’s puppy training classes with our Havanese puppy, Desmond. Classes were fun and informative, with owners being trained (in the nicest possible way) as much as our dogs. We learned to think about how we are communicating with Desmond and how to reinforce messages in a positive and consistent manner. Animal welfare is paramount to Martina, who rescheduled classes when the weather was too hot to be safe for the dogs. We also arranged a separate 1-2-1 session with Martina to address some issues we were having with Desmond, and we found the session quite helpful and reassuring. We look forward to enrolling in future classes with Martina in the new year.

Thank you very much, the classes were informative, relaxed and very enjoyable. I also liked the handouts, they were a good reminder of the sessions - very thoughtful for the humans who need as much or more training than the dogs! 🙂

Louis and I really enjoyed our first 1-2-1 training session. Martina has given me confidence that I am on the right track.

I warmly recommend ‘North Norfolk Dog Training’ where boisterous cockerpoo Monty and I attended 5 out of the 6 enjoyable, relaxed and productive sessions. Martina is calm and welcoming to all, and (luckily in our case) endlessly patient. I picked up many useful tips on training plus insights into dog psychology. Each session was followed up with clear handouts on the training covered together with helpful advice on related issues (such as harnesses) and the occasional recipe for healthy dog treats.

A life with dogs

Martina has shared her entire life with a variety of dog breeds: – Boxer, Great Dane, Patterdale Terrier, and most recently the Newfoundland. After rescuing her first Newfoundland in 2008, Martina gained a new-found appreciation and understanding of how important it is to properly train our dogs. She developed a real passion for helping people to get the very best out of their dogs, with her focus on educating owners via a hands-off approach to training.

The emphasis is on training the owners first and foremost, helping owners achieve a happy fulfilled life with their dog. Martina believes that forming a strong bond with our dogs is as equally important as early socialisation. She actively promotes force-free, science based training methods, and through learning specific skills and training methods you will form that all important bond. Martina welcomes the opportunity to work with you to ensure your dog is a happy, well-mannered and valuable member of the family.

Martina’s Continuing Professional Development (CDP) is done via The Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT). It’s important to always further expand her knowledge, and she considers on-going training to be invaluable for keeping herself well informed and up-to-date with all aspects of modern dog training and behaviour.
